Bullying Prevention and Awareness



At the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB), the safety and well-being of our students is our primary concern and a responsibility that our staff take very seriously.  

Under the priority of Belonging within our Strategic Plan​, our first goal is to ensure that our schools and workplaces are safe and welcoming, cultivating a sense of belonging and well-being for all. 

We have a number of measures in place to help support our efforts to promote and maintain safe, welcoming and inclusive learning environments for our students. 

The third week in November is recognized across Ontario as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. During this week, and every day of every week, we are committed to working with students, staff and parents to build safe, caring and welcoming school communities across HCDSB.

1. What is considered bullying?
  • Bullying can take on different forms, including physical, verbal, social, and electronic means (also known as cyberbullying)
  • Can be a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to causes harm, fear and/or distress
  • Bullying can occur in a context of a real or perceived power imbalance
  • Students may differentiate themselves to attain power over others through their physical attributes, skill set, economic status, social status, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, race, etc

2. What can I do to support my child when he/she is being bullied?

Speak to your child and encourage him/her to speak to an adult in the school. You may also wish to contact your school principal directly and provide the full details of your concerns.

3. What programs are available in Halton Catholic schools to address bullying?

There a number of programs and initiatives implemented across our district, some of which include: 
  • Playground Activity Leaders in Schools (P.A.L.S.) - a playground leadership program for schools to reduce the incidence of playground bullying
  • Peers Running Organized Play Station (PROPS) - encourages children to use their play time in the school yard by learning new games and activities, so that they are less likely to engage in bullying behaviour
  • Roots of Empathy - an evidence-based classroom program that aids in reducing levels of aggression, and increasing empathy and social/emotional competence in students
  • Tools for Life - builds relationship problem solving skills for children; 3 to 13 years of age
